How To Spray Paint A Coffee Table

coffee_table

This original old-fashioned coffee table was a great charity shop find and at just £4, a total bargain too.

We wanted to give it a modern-retro vibe and therefore picked statement shades of green and orange using Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Spray Paint.

You can really have fun with this project and don’t be afraid to use strong contrasting colours to create an eclectic look.

Check out our bright combination above and follow this how-to guide for best results…

What you will need

  • An old coffee table
  • Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Spray Paint
  • Rust-Oleum Surface Primer
  • Newspaper / dust sheets
  • Masking tape or painter’s tape

Steps

  1. Move the table to be painted to a well-ventilated area and place on top of newspaper or a dust sheet. Mask off any areas of the object not to be painted – we unscrewed the legs from our table as we wanted to paint these a different colour but if they aren’t detachable make sure they are completely covered to ensure a clean, tidy finish. Protect the surrounding area with additional dust sheets or newspaper.

  2. Ensure surfaces to be painted are free from loose paint, rust, wax, oil and grease by sanding down with a fine grade sandpaper. Previously painted surfaces should always be abraded to provide a key (a rough surface for the paint to latch onto). Bare wood and metal should be primed with Rust-Oleum Surface Primer to ensure an even coat – but make sure you leave time for this to fully dry before adding colour.

  3. Using your selected colour, hold the can approximately 30cm from the surface of the table and spray in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping with each stroke. For best results whilst spraying keep the can the same distance from the surface and in motion. Apply several light coats a few minutes apart.

For our coffee table we used Rust-Oleum Surface Primer followed by Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch in Green Apple (Satin) and Real Orange (Gloss).
