How to paint metal railings

Metal Expert Water Based Paint is the perfect way to refresh metal railings for a quick and simple makeover.

Easy to apply, the 3-in-1 primer, undercoat and topcoat can be applied directly to rust and any metal surface. Read on to find out how to refresh and protect your gates, railings and more with an ultra-durable finish, designed to resist cracking, peeling and blistering for up to 12 years*.

What you will need

  • Rust-Oleum Metal Expert Water-Based Metal Paint
  • Brush, roller or electric sprayer
  • Krud Kutter Cleaner / Degreaser
  • Clean cloth
  • Paint stirrer
  • Dust sheet (if required)
  • Scraper, wire brush or sanding block

Steps

  1. Remove any loose paint or rust by scraping and wire brushing, or sanding your railings. Make sure to protect yourself with a mask and/or goggles.

  2. Once you’ve ensured that the surface is smooth, clean your metal railings with Krud Kutter Cleaner / Degreaser to remove any dirt, dust, debris or other contaminants. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry.

Tip: You may wish to lay down a dust sheet to protect the pavement from drips and spills.

  3. Stir the Metal Expert Water-Based Metal Paint thoroughly before use. Apply with a suitable brush or roller. If using a roller, move back and forth, rolling away from previously coated areas. If spraying, dilute the paint with up to 10% water.

Apply a second coat after 4 hours if necessary. Paint small details a different metallic shade for the finishing touch.

  4. And that’s it! Rust-Oleum Metal Expert Water-Based Metal Paint is the ideal way to refresh your exteriors. The corrosion and mould-resistant* formula is water-shedding and ultra-durable, specifically designed to stand up to severe weather and resist cracking, peeling and blistering for up to 12 years*.
